Tests commissioned by Opel showed, that after 90 minutes of driving without air conditioning at an ambient temperature of 35 ° C, the driver's reaction time is extended by up to 65%! In other words, braking distance from speed 100 km / h increases by 30 meters! Similar results were obtained in 600 km road tests, which were subjected to a representative group of drivers. Increase the cabin temperature from 24 up to 35 ° C led to more frequent lane exits, frequent (nervous) correction of the track and, finally, to a radical limitation of the ability to perceive external signals (pedestrians, road signs etc.). Moreover, the results deteriorated drastically in the final phase of the long-hour test.
TUV experts from Hanover confirm, that the reaction speed of a driver at a temperature of 35 ° C is comparable to that of a driver who has about half a per mille of alcohol in his blood! His other behaviors also change at the same time, aggressiveness increases, risky maneuvers become more frequent, increases driving speed. Scientists explain this phenomenon, among others. the desire to quickly "escape" from the unbearably hot surroundings and the helplessness of the driver, whom despite attempts (opening windows, the roof, air damper control, etc.) the situation has not been fully brought under control.
Statistical studies by scientists at the University of Wuppertal have shown huge, but so far almost completely unknown, influence of temperatures on the number of road accidents. In urban traffic, in almost all representative "climate and road" zones into which the territory of Germany was divided, high thermal load of vehicle cabins (interior temperature above 32 ° C) was (an increase in the accident rate by approx. 25%), interior temperatures above approx. 37° C comes second along with the wet road (increase by 18%). The statisticians also showed a greater risk of internal temperatures above 32 ° C (+6%) than heavy rain or a sharp change in weather.
Therefore, the positive impact of air conditioning on driving safety is undeniable not only due to the factors already discussed, but also for several other reasons. Turning it on forces the windows to close, this reduces the driver's fatigue as a result of the noise entering the interior. Filters installed in modern ventilation and air conditioning systems are able to catch micro pollutants or pollen from plants, which can lead to severe allergic reactions dangerous for the driver (tearing, sneezing, etc.). Some systems are also equipped with activated carbon filters, eliminating harmful substances in the air stream. In the autumn and winter season, properly controlled air conditioning allows the driver to dry the windows faster and more effectively, because during the process of cooling the air in the cabin, a significant amount of moisture is precipitated from it.
So let's remember about the impact of air conditioning not only on comfort, but most of all for driving safety, thinking about completing the equipment for a new car.
