MONACO – year 1929
W 1929 In the year, the Monaco Grand Prix was organized for the first time, having an absolutely unique position among other Grand Prix competitions. It is the only track on the streets of the city, and at the same time the shortest Grand Prix race track, measuring only 3,14 km. For this reason, the riders had to cover more laps. The number of laps was initially 100, and later 80.
Despite the low average speeds (gradually 80-110 km/h) the race is physically and technically strenuous, with several thousand gear changes per race. The start is from the quay next to the Monaco Automobile Club building; behind the take-off and a right turn at an angle of 180 ° "at the gas meter” the route ascends to the Hotel de Paris, circling it with a left turn in front of the casino. This is where the most difficult part of the race begins - two safety pins” bends "at the Mirabeau hotel” and "at the station”. When driving under the railroad tracks, the cars get out onto the quay, where it is possible to increase the speed. However, be careful with the tunnel, a sharp turn near the pier and a right-angle turn at trafice”. Recently, there are plans to wind up this race, in which Louis Chiron competed traditionally.
