MERCEDES-BENZ 500 K – year 1935
Manufacturer: Daimler Benz AG, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, Germany.
Mercedes-Benz 500 K belongs to the classic representatives of solid and reliable cars of the 1930s. Comes from 1934 r. but two years later it was replaced by a more powerful model 540 K.
Model 500 The K was produced as either a regular or a special roadster, open travel car, convertible in variants A, B i C, sport-coupe and limousine. Particular types of bodywork differed from each other in the number of seats, side windows and doors. The factory had both an aerodynamic coupe, the so-called. highway courier, as well as armored models for generals. Each version, regardless of the type of body, cost 22 000 marek.
The car had an in-line engine, 8-cylinder, of a capacity 5019 cm3. At a low compression ratio - only 5,5 - the engine developed power 73,5 kW (100 KM). With the compressor, the highest power was 117.7 kW (160 KM) by 3400 RPM. Among other design curiosities, the crankshaft on nine bearings deserves attention, self-made double carburetor, and especially the Roots compressor. The compressor was started in third gear at speed 30 km / h and turned off after reaching 3400 RPM, which suited 100 km/h. So it only served to accelerate. At a constant speed, the Maybach system would engage a semi-automatic overdrive.
The frame chassis had wheels independently suspended at the front, and at the rear, the oscillating drive shaft with a correcting spring. Low-pressure tires of sizes were mounted on the spoke wheels of the Rudge system 7,00-17.
In the manual, the manufacturer specified the maximum speed 175 km/h. Tracked down 160 km / h with average fuel consumption 26 do 35 liters per 100 km. After driving over 1500 km the oil was changed (10 liters!), which was then a small fortune.
Total produced 354 copies of this representative sports car.
