MERCEDES 630 – year 1926

First contacts between Daimler-Motor-Gesellschaft in Untertürkheim and Benz & Co., The Rheinische Automobil und Motorenfabrik AG in Mannheim date from 1919 r., but only on the day 29 June 1926. Daimler's star merged with Benz's laurel wreath, creating the new joint stock company Daimler-Benz AG.
Two years before the merger of the companies, the precursor of the famous Mercedes-type compressor cars appeared 630 or according to the brand name 24/100/140, where the digit 24 stood for the number of "tax horses."”, 100 - power without compressor and 140 - power from the compressor. Its designer was Dr.. c. Verdynand Porsche, which in 1923 r. moved to Daimler. The son of Daimler was still working on the compressor, Paul, at a time when he was chief designer in Untertürkheim, however, after the failure of a 2-liter race car in Indianapolis, he gave up construction work.
Mercedes 630 it had a 6-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 6240 cm3. The diameter of the cylinders had 94 mm, piston stroke 150 mm, a compression ratio 4,7:1. The maximum power was 73,5 kW (100 KM) or 104kW (140 KM) with Roots compressor at 3000 images/ min. Cylinder block, crankcase and pistons made of light alloys, the cylinder liners and cylinder heads were cast iron. The drive to the rear rigid axle was provided by a multi-plate clutch and a 4-speed gearbox. The chassis had mechanical brakes with vacuum assist on 4 wheels. With wheelbase 3750 mm and a tare weight of almost 2500 kg six, or actually the seven-seater limousine was very impressive.
The car cost 26 800 gold marks and it was bought not only by rich industrialists, but also popular theater actors and singers. Soon after "great” the second version of this 6-cylinder travel car appeared - the model 400, of a capacity 4 liters, also marked with the symbol 15/70/100.
