ACHILLE VARZI (1904-1948) – Italian
The complete opposite of Tazia Nuvolari, like fire and ice, there is the next great personality in the world of Italian players – Achille Varzi. Coming from a wealthy family, with his impeccable looks and a straight face as a poker player, he looked more like a playboy than a car racer. Always seen with a characteristic cigarette in the corner of his mouth, he did not lose his head in the most critical situations. During training before the Grand Prix races in Tunis in 1936 year his wheel suspension broke at speed 200 km / h and the car went off the track. Varzi, luckily, nothing happened, got out of the wreckage and calmly went to the stall.
He has won more than twenty Grand Prix races on a variety of cars, and especially on Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Bugatti i Auto Union. After the Second World War, he founded his own racing company in Argentina, "Scuderia Achille Varzi."”, planning to settle there. Unfortunately, fate decided otherwise. During training for the Swiss Grand Prix race in Bern, he skidded and died under a overturned car.
